Background

The “madelen” platform, created by the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA), was launched in the midst of the 2020 lockdown with the goal of offering unprecedented access to the INA’s collections, including full-length series, dramas, and cult classics . Until then, the INA’s archives had only been accessible to the general public in short versions—clips that were already very popular—on social media.

To give the general public access to its audiovisual heritage, on all screens, including TVs, mobiles and via applications, INA needed to call on a technical partner.

In this context, VOD Factory was selected by the INA to handle the technical migration of madelen, provide support to the teams as they learn to use the platform, and enable its distribution across a variety of screens and environments.

“This is invaluable oversight in terms of service quality; there’s a real sense of closeness with the teams on a day-to-day basis, which sets VOD Factory apart.”

Zoé Macheret, Director of INA madelen.

Customer challenges

For this migration project, INA faced several major challenges:

  • Multi-screen accessibility: the platform, initially designed for the web, had to be adapted to use on TVs and mobile applications.
  • Technical requirements: in-house teams did not have the resources needed to develop TV screens.
  • Backoffice management and fluidity: The old back office used by the teams no longer met their needs, and the backoffice had to be easily taken in hand by the editorial and marketing teams responsible for running the VOD platform.
  • Adapting to regulatory changes and user feedback: Recurring requests for changes, linked both to compliance requirements (RGPD in particular) and customer feedback, required greater responsiveness and technical flexibility.

Solutions VOD Factory

VOD Factory 's team provided tailored solutions to the INA's challenges through:

  • A successful technical migration: The platform redesign enabled hyper-distribution across all screens and environments.
To reach an exponentially growing audience, madelen has benefited from VOD Factory ’s expertisein managing mobile and TV apps on iOS and Android platforms, as well as from its strategic partnerships with operators and distributors such as Orange and Free.
  • A turnkey, intuitive backoffice
  • Multi-device management of the platform through a single back office: The INA team can easily manage the madelen platform across its various environments using a single tool,

Tailored Support: Beyond the technical migration, VOD Factory provided ongoing support and regular assistance to incorporate the changes requested by the INA, thereby ensuring the solution’s compliance and constant innovation.

Impacts and results

The collaboration with VOD Factory has yielded significant results for the INA SVOD platform madelen :

  • madelen is now available on 8 platforms: Web , Mobile, Tablets, Android TV, Apple TV, Samsung TV, Amazon, Orange
  • Significant increase in subscriptions: 2 years after migration, the user base has almost doubled, from 40,000 to 82,000 subscribers.
  • Optimized content management: With 12,000 pieces of content available and an intuitive backoffice, the marketing team can now easily manage and update the offer, while integrating regulatory and technical developments.
