The transformation of INA's SVOD platform, madelen

Background

The "madelen" platform of the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA), was born in full confinement in 2020, with the aim of offering unprecedented access to INA collections, series, dramas and cult programs in their entirety. Until now, INA's archives were only accessible to the general public in short versions, on social networks, of extracts that were already very popular.

To give the general public access to its audiovisual heritage, on all screens, including TVs, mobiles and via applications, INA needed to call on a technical partner.

Against this backdrop, VOD Factory was chosen by INA to handle the technical migration of madelen, support the teams in getting to grips with it, and enable it to be distributed on a variety of screens and environments.

"Valuable follow-up in terms of service quality, there's a real closeness with the teams on a daily basis, which sets VOD Factory apart."

Zoé Macheret, director of INA madelen.

Customer challenges

For this migration project, INA faced several major challenges:

  • Multi-screen accessibility: the platform, initially designed for the web, had to be adapted to use on TVs and mobile applications.
  • Technical requirements: in-house teams did not have the resources needed to develop TV screens.
  • Backoffice management and fluidity: The old back office used by the teams no longer met their needs, and the backoffice had to be easily taken in hand by the editorial and marketing teams responsible for running the VOD platform.
  • Adapting to regulatory changes and user feedback: Recurring requests for changes, linked both to compliance requirements (RGPD in particular) and customer feedback, required greater responsiveness and technical flexibility.

VOD Factory solutions

The VOD Factory team responded to INA's challenges with :

  • A successful technical migration: The platform redesign enabled hyper-distribution across all screens and environments.
To reach an exponential audience, madelen benefited from VOD Factory's expertise in managing mobile and TV applications on iOS and Android environments, as well as its strategic partnerships with operators and distributors such as Orange and Free.
  • A turnkey, intuitive backoffice
  • Multi-device management of the platform from a single backoffice: the INA team can easily manage the madelen platform on its different environments using a single tool,

Tailor-made support: In addition to the technical migration, VOD Factory provided ongoing monitoring and regular assistance to integrate the changes requested by INA, guaranteeing constant compliance and innovation of the solution.

Impacts and results

The collaboration with VOD Factory has generated significant results for the INA madelen SVOD platform:

  • madelen is now available on 8 environments: Web, Mobiles, Tablets, Android TV, Apple TV, Samsung TV, Amazon, Orange
  • Significant increase in subscriptions: 2 years after migration, the user base has almost doubled, from 40,000 to 82,000 subscribers.
  • Optimized content management: With 12,000 pieces of content available and an intuitive backoffice, the marketing team can now easily manage and update the offer, while integrating regulatory and technical developments.
